The recent Apple software release/update has changed the game for Augmented Reality accessibility.

The barrier to entry for AR (previously) was the fact that users would need to download a specific application to use AR - similar to how QR codes used to work.

But with the new Apple release on September 1, every iPhone user can automatically access AR features straight from their phone.

iOS 11 introduces ARKit, a new framework which allows you to easily create unparalleled augmented reality experiences for iPhone and iPad.

By blending digital objects and information with the environment around you, ARKit takes apps beyond the screen, freeing them to interact with the real world in entirely new ways.

This will soon be released on Windows and Android devices through Near Field Communication (NFC) chips.

NFC allows phones, tablets, and laptops to share data with other NFC-equipped devices. The technology evolved from radio-frequency identification (RFID) tech. RFID is behind those security scan cards that get you into the office every day.

NFC is very much like RFID, but NFC is limited to communication within about four inches, which is why you have to hold your phone so close to the contactless reader if you’re using Apple Pay or Samsung Pay.

So how does NFC relate to AR?

NFC chip installations will allow users to instantly unlock the power of augmented reality – regardless of their device. Swipe any phone, tablet or mobile device across an offline “thing” that has an NFC chip installed and unlock the magic of an augmented reality.

And it can be truly magical new world (or even old one)...

The applications are endless and no doubt we’ll start to see this moving into the mainstream.
