If you want to make your video content stand out, then it pays to optimise your YouTube channel. We have the knowledge to make your channel work for you and drive visitors to your content.

In an age when content marketing rules , creating videos for a brand is a must. However, it’s not enough to simply upload them to your YouTube channel and expect people to find your content. Luckily YouTube offers a lot of great features to help make your content stand out. In order to unlock a number of features, you may need to verify your YouTube channel. This can be done in a number of ways but most simply by connecting to a Google Plus page.

Add a channel description

Describing who you are and what you do is important and this information will appear across the entire YouTube channel. The description should be accurate and include keywords relevant to your industry.

Connect to Google Plus

While the benefits and the future of Google Plus will continue to be the subject of debate, right now if you have a Google Plus page, it should be connected to your YouTube channel. It will add power to your Google Plus page and mean that all your Google-based content can be found in one place.  Don’t worry if your page is already connected to another profile. Google have very helpfully set up a service to help you connect your content.

Customise Your URL

When you set up a YouTube channel, the default URL will be a random selection of letters and numbers. Not only is this pretty unattractive but it make it more difficult for you to find your channel and the address a little less sharable. The perfect URL should bring your channel in line with your brand. In order to create a custom URL, click on your account name in the top right hand side of your channel and click on YouTube Account settings. In the advanced settings section, there will be a section titled “Create Custom URL”. Here you can choose the perfect URL for your brand. Don’t worry of your first choice is taken; there are a lot of competing YouTube channels out there. Pick something that incorporates the name but maybe add a relevant number of perhaps the world “channel”.  For example we might use the URL “YouTube.com/OnlyW3bChannel” and that's still perfectly on brand. Once you have selected your channel URL, it’s permanent unless you have good friends at Google, so choose wisely.

Add Channel Art

You’ll be prompted to add a Channel Icon as soon as you create your account but the channel art is a little more complicated. Channel art has to serve three different mediums namely, television, desktop and mobile. The image you upload should be 2560 x 1440 to fit the dimensions of a widescreen television. The area shown on the desktop and mobile versions are pre-determined so it’s probably best to use a template when designing in order to make the most of this feature. Helpfully, Google Support offer this handy guide.

Connect to your social channels

It always pays to have your channels connected and YouTube offers a simple way to link to your site as well as your social networks, and it all appears within the channel art. Within the “My Channel” section on your channel, click on your channel art and you’ll be offered the option to “Edit Links”. Click here and you can add your Twitter, Google Plus, Facebook and LinkedIn connections among many others. You also can choose how many of these links to add.

Annotate your videos

Annotations are probably one of the most underutilised tools available to YouTube users. Users can add text to any section of the video to provide elucidation on any part of the video but you can do so much more than that.  You can add links within the content to great effect. You could use this to create a table of contents in a long form video, and link to a particular timecode. You can also add links to other videos within the channel to help drive users to your other content or you can even add a subscribe button to make it simpler for users. Provided that your own site is verified you can even add a link to that too. This can be a complicated process but one that that can add infinite benefits to your video content. Find out more about annotations here.

Add Custom Thumbnails

Make your videos look pretty before they even play with a cutom thumbnail. Be default YouTube selects a random frame form your video to display to users as the cover photo. With a custom thumbnail you can upload your own image to act as the perfect title page.
